Passport Renewal in India: Tatkal vs. Normal Scheme
When you're renewing or applying for a passport in India, you'll choose between the normal scheme and the Tatkal (faster) scheme. The right choice depends on how urgently you need the passport and whether your documentation is fully in order.
Normal scheme
This is the standard process most applicants use. It typically involves document verification and police verification (where applicable) before the passport is printed and dispatched.
Tatkal scheme
Tatkal is designed for urgent cases and generally processes faster, but it comes with a higher government fee and stricter documentation requirements — any inconsistency in your supporting documents is more likely to cause a rejection under Tatkal since there's less room to sort out discrepancies during processing.
Which one should you choose?
If you have an upcoming international trip and your existing documents (Aadhaar, address proof, date of birth proof) are consistent and up to date, Tatkal can save valuable time. If there's any mismatch — a changed address not yet updated, a name spelling difference across documents — it's often safer to resolve that first, even if it means using the normal scheme.
